Highlights - Your Success Stories

Cobra MX - Nichols Brothers Replace Golds with the MX

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, located in Freeland, Washington, have been building vessels for people who ride or work on the water for over four generations. During those four generations, the welding crew at Nichols Boats have been loyal users and vocal supporters of the MK Products’ Cobra Gold welding gun.

Introduced nearly 15 years ago, Nichols Brothers has anywhere from 120 to 130 Cobra Gold systems in use daily. However, nothing lasts forever, even though it seems like the Cobra Gold has..

Cobra MX - Time to Upgrade

One who has worked with the Cobra Gold gun would be quick to say that it has served them well. The Cobra Gold was the industry standard for aluminum push pull MIG welding for many years. It worked equally well with mild stainless steel and flux cored welding applications.

MK Products recently introduced the replacement for the Cobra Gold, the Cobra MX gun. Not only is it available in air or liquid cooled models, it is also available with 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch consumables. The head weight is only two pounds five ounces, making the MX easy to work with, all day long.

Answers to Your Challenges

Does Your Gun Barrel Leak? Does It Over Heat?

Q. Does your gun barrel leak water or gas? Or does your gun barrel heat up fast?

A. 99.9% of the time this is due to the barrel not being seated correctly.

Open the plastic door exposing the drive and idler rolls; this is where you should look for proper seating. The copper seat of the barrel should be flush with the aluminum block directly in front of the drive rolls.

If the barrel does not seat all the way down, the o-rings may need lubrication or may be damaged. But yes, it is possible to tighten the taper lock nut without wholly seating the barrel.

Hot Tips and Hot Topics

Cobra MX Tips - Aluminum Kits and Consumables

TIP #1: If you are planning on welding aluminum most or all of the time, upgrade your Cobra MX with the insulated groove drive roll kit. Part numbers for wire size specific kits are listed in your owners manual, or call MK for details. Keep the standard knurled drive roll for spare part or switching back to steel or flux cored welding.

TIP #2: When ordering a new Cobra MX be sure to order the model that uses the same consumables as any existing guns in your shop. You may already have many cups and tips that will work on the Cobra MX Gun!
